Unitea

Client Background

Unitea is a program at the University of Alberta. It strives to foster connections between students, build a supportive community, and strengthen students’ sense of belonging. Through the program, students meet with Unitea volunteers to connect over a cup of tea.

My Role

  • Designed the visual identity
  • Took and edited photographs
  • Developed visual strategy for campaign

Primary Audience

  • Current University of Alberta students

Goal

  • Bring awareness to the Unitea program, push students to the website, and ultimately get them to sign up for “Tea Times”

Requirements

  • Follow Unitea brand guidelines
    (note: this project was completed before the 2021 U of A brand launch)
  • Achieve a casual, approachable, comfortable, inclusive, and personal feel that's modern, mature, and relevant
  • Avoid a look and feel that's too corporate or rigid

Design Strategy

The main strategy centers around photographs of Unitea volunteers taken from the first person perspective of a program participant. This allows the viewer to imagine themselves already participating in the program with their cup of tea seemingly waiting to be sipped in the foreground of the images.

The happy, friendly, and engaging faces of the Unitea volunteers creates a comfortable and welcoming feeling. The whole scene gives the viewer a sense of what to expect and helps remove intimidation and uncertainty from the experience – a barrier for sign-ups.

Desaturating the photographs, adding playful pops of colour with clean crisp graphic elements, and choosing a modern sans-serif typeface, creates a sense of friendly, but modern maturity.
